Tips For How To Help Your Child With ADHD

A child with ADHD can be a “handful,” but you already know that if your child has Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. We have listed some valuable tips for how to help your child with ADHD.

First Things First, Do Not Beat Yourself Up

Although ADHD is inherited, it is not due to poor parenting on your part or a negative home environment. Get over that emotional guilt quickly so you can concentrate on how to help your child become successful and happy.

Communicate What Is Acceptable And Unacceptable Behavior

The most important thing here is to be consistent. This is true for any child, but especially for one with ADHD. Once your child understands what good behavior is and how it is rewarded, they will be more likely to resist the impulse to do the opposite.

Clearly explain the consequences of bad behavior, and what is unacceptable at home or outside the home. Not going to bed when told to, not getting up in the morning, any outbursts, or breaking any rules should have immediate consequences.

Posting or stating the rules in a positive fashion, rather than negative seems to work best.

Establish Routines

Again, it’s important to stick to routines as much as possible. It will help your child find structure in their day. Find a time in every day for your child to get outside and/or engage in some form of exercise. This releases some energy and may reduce outbursts.

Create A Calming Bedtime Schedule

Sleep is ultra-important for a child with ADHD. Lack of sufficient sleep can make them more disruptive and inattentive. Limit any sugary drinks or caffeine before bedtime and have them turn off devices at least an hour before. Find a quiet activity for them to do right before bedtime.

Don’t Forget To Find Time For Yourself

Have your own sleep routine to reduce your stress, walk, go to the gym, have lunch with a friend. You need your own relaxing few minutes each day to be your best calm self for your child.

Do Your Homework

Do your own due diligence and read as much as you can about ADHD. Consult with TLC Pediatric Therapies about issues at home or how to resolve certain behaviors.

Remain Positive And Stay Calm

Easy to say, right? Even with a child or teenager with ADHD, make an effort to stay calm and praise appropriate behavior. It will help you connect better with your child possibly making it easier the next time they are expected to complete a task. When you are positive, they will be also.
